BIOGRAPHY
Finnish violinist Sylvia Hurttia is a versatile musician, performing over one hundred concerts a year as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, all around the world. She has given concerts in many prestigious venues in several European and Asian countries as well as in the USA and Australia.
As concertmaster and section leader, Sylvia has performed with Detmold Chamber Orchestra, Lappeenranta City Orchestra, the Sigyn Sinfonietta and the Australian International Opera Company. Since 2014 she has held the position of Associate Concertmaster with Chamber Philharmonia Cologne, and performs yearly concert tours with the ensemble in Germany, Spain, France, England, Scotland, Ireland and Australia.
In 2009 Sylvia founded the Odysseus String Quartet with her violinist sister Linnea Hurttia. Other members of the ensemble are violist Ivan Podyachev and cellist Juhana Ritakorpi. Their performances have attracted attention and enthusiasm among international audiences.
Sylvia has performed in several prestigious festivals, such as the Turku, Naantali and Iittala music festivals in Finland, Musiksommer Reichenau, Attersee Klassik, and the Salzburg Festival in Austria, and the Chigiana Summer Music Festival in Italy. She is the founder and artistic director of the Lieto Chamber Music Days - a chamber music festival in Finland. Her repertoire encompasses not only the standard classical canon, but also the contemporary music of our time. Sylvia regularly collaborates with composers and has given world-premiere performances of several solo and ensemble works.
Sylvia began studying violin at the age of 4 at Turku Conservatory in Finland with Arja Sippel and Araik Resjan. In 2010 she graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the Turku Music Academy before going on to complete her Masters of Music (Violin Soloist) in 2014 at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold in Germany under the guidance of Prof. Thomas Christian. In addition, Sylvia has studied with Vilmos Szabadi at the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy in Budapest, and with Jela Spitkova and Roswitha Randacher at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien. During her degrees, Sylvia attended master classes with several distinguished musicians such as Ilja Grubert, Pavel Vernikov, Régis Pasquier, Dora Schwarzberg and Jordi Savall i.a. as well as the Alban Berg String Quartet and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
